Old Ashtarak is a gorgeous family-owned business located in the center of Ashtarak city. Developed using the old 19th century structure of the building, the building once belonged to a priest and was turned into a makeshift hospital during the second world war. Later, it became a winery and then a military hub during its post-soviet period before standing abandoned for 20 years. In 2016, Habib Aroyan (Canada, 2015) and his son Hovik fell in love at first sight of the building and decided to renovate the space into a vintage restaurant, bringing in more family members to run the kitchen and maintain the business. “A nice family run restaurant in a beautiful old building (especially the wooden balcony) that was formerly used as wine making. They didnt have some meals of the menu but got very nice food for decent prices.”
“Warm welcome and quick service compared to some other restaurants. Very good and tasty food for a good price. The location is a bit remoted from the city center but is really worth it!”
“I would eat here twice a week if I could. The waiter (owner?) translated the menu for us and we enjoyed many delicious Armenian dishes, which I can’t list because I don’t speak Armenian. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Old Ashtarak.”
“The restaurant is running by the Syrian Armenians. The menu is not very large, it contains common western Armenian middle east dishes. But what is really exceptional about the place is the ambience. The restaurant occupy an XIX century house with garden. They reconstructed the property, preserving very authentic character. You can seat inside in an arched chamber, or on a wooden balcony, or in the garden. This is definitely a hidden pearl in an narrow streets of Ashtarak.”
