Alaverdi-Sarahart cable car ride

Lori

A Soviet-era cable car built to carry miners still runs up the Debed canyon between Alaverdi and Sarahart, a short 15-minute ride that doubles as a slice of industrial history. Available year-round for just 100 AMD, though service is intermittent, so it's worth checking locally before planning around it.

Horseback riding through Dzoraget Canyon

Lori

This full-day guided ride follows the rim of the Debed gorge down into the Dzoraget valley, covering more ground and more dramatic terrain than a short horseback outing elsewhere in Armenia. Running May through October from 20,000 AMD, it's a serious commitment best suited to visitors comfortable spending most of a day in the saddle.

Mountain biking at Boo Bike Park (Vanadzor)

Lori

Boo Bike Park, above Vanadzor, is Armenia's first dedicated mountain-bike park, combining a pump track with forest trails built specifically for riding rather than repurposed footpaths. A 3-hour session costs from 8,000 AMD and runs May through October, suiting both newer riders on the pump track and more experienced ones on the forest trails.

Whitewater rafting on the Debed River

Lori

This 3-hour guided rafting trip covers 12 km of the Debed and Dzoraget rapids starting from Tumanyan, a rare whitewater run in a country with few navigable rivers. Costing from 25,000 AMD and running April through June when snowmelt keeps the water level up, it's one of Armenia's few proper rafting experiences and requires a certified guide.

Kotayk

Near the village of Bjni, a 1-hour tasting samples Kotayk's local wine and brandy production, a smaller-scale counterpart to the better-known wineries of the Ararat plain. Available year-round from 5,000 AMD, it's an easy stop for visitors touring the region's villages.

Kotayk

A village host in Garni teaches visitors to bake the town's well-known gata pastry and lavash flatbread, in a hands-on 90-minute session. Available year-round from 8,000 AMD, it pairs naturally with a visit to Garni's temple and gorge.
