Ararat
Goravan Sands is a small but genuine semi-desert landscape of dunes and sparse vegetation, an unusual sight in mountainous Armenia and home to reptiles and plants found almost nowhere else in the country. A 90-minute walk through the sanctuary is free and best done April through June, before summer heat makes the exposed terrain uncomfortable.

Herons, cormorants and storks gather around the Azat Reservoir, making a 2-hour birdwatching walk here a relaxed complement to the water-based activities on offer at the same spot. Best April through June and free to do, it's an easy add-on for visitors already at the reservoir for paddling or fishing.

The Armash fish ponds are one of Armenia's premier birdwatching sites, drawing rare and red-listed migratory species that stop here on their way through the Ararat valley. A 3-hour visit is best done April through June during peak migration, and it's free — bring binoculars and check ahead for which species have recently been spotted.

Inside Khosrov Forest State Reserve, a 5-hour trek leads to the Astghik and Vahagn waterfalls, two cascades tucked into forested terrain that's home to some of Armenia's best-protected wilderness. Access requires the reserve's 3,000 AMD entry fee and is best done May through October; a guide is recommended given the reserve's size and limited signage.

The trail to Havuts Tar follows the Azat valley to a cluster of ruined medieval church buildings perched above the gorge, a 3-hour round trip that mixes history with genuinely scenic walking. Free to hike and best done April through October, it's a good middle-distance option between the shorter valley walks and the full-day Kakavaberd trek.

Kakavaberd, also known as Geghi fortress, sits on a near-inaccessible cliff top above the Azat gorge, and reaching it is a demanding full-day hike (around 8 hours round trip) through reserve land. Open May through October for 3,000 AMD, it rewards the effort with one of the most dramatically sited ruins in Armenia and sweeping gorge views.

The Ararat valley's flat, orchard-lined roads make for easy, scenic cycling, whether on a road bike or mountain bike, with Mount Ararat as a near-constant backdrop. A 4-hour ride runs April through October and starts from 6,000 AMD — a good lower-effort alternative to the region's hiking trails, especially in apricot-blossom season.

This 2-hour ride follows the Azat River gorge near Garni, taking in dramatic rock formations and river views from horseback rather than on foot. Trips run April through October and start from 15,000 AMD — a relaxed way to see one of the region's most scenic gorges without a full hiking commitment.
