Surb Gevorg Monastery, Mughni

The Monastery of Surb Gevorg (St. George) in the village of Mughni is one of the finest examples of 17th-century Armenian architecture. Built between 1661 and 1669, its church is renowned for the bold alternating bands of red and black tuff across the façade and the graceful arcaded bell tower above the entrance. The monastery long held relics associated with St. George and was an important spiritual center. The interior preserves notable frescoes. Compact and beautifully detailed, Mughni sits close to Ashtarak and makes an easy, rewarding stop on a tour of Aragatsotn's churches.
