The Black Fortress or Sev Berd is a massive abandoned Russian Imperial fortress in Gyumri. It was built in response to the Russo-Turkish War (1828–1829) and was completed in 1834. The fortress is a circular structure made of black tufa, which is where it gets its name "Sev Berd" (Black Fortress). It was designed to protect the borders of the Russian Empire from the Ottoman Empire.
The building is an architectural masterpiece of military engineering. It sits on a hill overlooking the city, providing a strategic vantage point. The fortress was part of a larger defense system in Alexandropol (now Gyumri) and played a crucial role in the safety of the region for decades. Today, it is one of the most recognizable symbols of the city’s strength and historical significance.
The Black Fortress has a unique circular shape and was once capable of holding thousands of soldiers. Inside, the architecture is designed for defense, but it also features impressive acoustics. Because of this, the fortress has been partially renovated and is now used as a cultural center and a concert hall for high-profile events. The interior remains atmospheric, blending the rugged military history with modern lighting and staging.
From the top of the fortress hill, you can see a panoramic view of the entire city and the nearby Mother Armenia statue. Visitors often come here to feel the historical weight of the walls and to see the contrast between the dark stones of the fortress and the vibrant city below.
The entrance is free (for the exterior and general viewing), though some indoor sections or events may require a ticket.
