A short motorboat cruise takes in the turquoise expanse of Lake Sevan, the largest lake in the Caucasus, from open water rather than the shore. The 30-minute ride costs from 5,000 AMD and runs May through October, working well as an easy first taste of the lake before trying something more active.

Lake Sevan's shoreline holds some of the only proper beaches in landlocked Armenia, and a couple of hours spent swimming and sunbathing here is the classic summer escape from Yerevan's heat. Argishtikhinili was a major Urartian city built in the 8th century BC on the Ararat plain, and its ruins — walls, foundations and fragments of the settlement — can be explored freely on a 1-hour walk. Best done April through October when the dirt-road access is easiest, it's a quiet stop for visitors interested in Armenia's pre-Christian history.
