The mix of gorge, forest and open steppe around Kasagh and Amberd supports a good variety of birdlife, from alpine species higher up to forest birds in the gorge itself. A 2-hour birdwatching walk is best done April through June during peak activity and breeding season, and it's free — bring binoculars and, ideally, a local guide who knows the calls.
